Over 20,000 French, Polish, Czech and Swedish fans attended the performances featuring A-list talent, including John Legend, Rita Ora, Clean Bandit, Aya Nakamura, Hyphen Hyphen and Kendji Girac.

Summer vibes across our destinations

On June 15 and 16, Shopping City Süd hosted the Pro World Surf Tour for the third consecutive year. 63 elite surfers from seven countries competed for the grand prize of €10,000, delighting visitors with spectacular turns and tricks. The event attracted more than 2,000 local and international guests. Until mid-September, amateurs also got a chance to hone their skills at the Multiplex CityWave. Thanks to professional coaching and a handrail, CityWave allows surfing in the simplest and safest conditions, for the enjoyment of adults and children.

Summer vibes across our destinations

From July 5 to 21, Westfield Carré Sénart – our flagship shopping centre southeast of Paris, was bubbling with fun and excitement. There was something for every taste and every generation. Over 5,000 guests enjoyed the beach located at the entrance of the centre, where they could lounge on deckchairs on the sand or have some fun with the mini pedal boats and mechanical surf. While some visitors spent their day playing mini-golf, others relaxed with a fun game of pétanque or mölkky in front of the outdoor restaurants. In the evening, those needing a boost of energy enjoyed Zumba and cross-training classes hosted in partnership with a local association. From July 5 to 7, 800 visitors also got a chance to hop on a hot air balloon!

Summer vibes across our destinations

On July 12, Westfield Topanga & The Village (Los Angeles) hosted an outdoor movie night as part of its Fri-YAY summer series. American classic Clueless graced the giant screen on the rooftop of The Village. The event started with pre-show entertainment, with guests enjoying dinner and some sweet sounds from local artist Lucia Marco. Actress Twink Caplan (AKA Miss Geist, the teacher in Clueless), then introduced the film and shared some fun facts about the production. Guests enjoyed bottomless popcorn and drinks, as well as complimentary candy provided by Sloan’s Ice Cream. The sold-out event welcomed over 260 guests, raising nearly $2,000 for the evening’s non-profit partner the Calabasas Film Festival (CFF). CFF is dedicated to honouring the future of the industry by empowering young filmmakers and providing the community opportunities to connect over mutual passions for film and television while enjoying local culinary arts and entertainment.

In July, Westfield Mall of Scandinavia launched its new rooftop area named Top Floor, welcoming close to 100,000 visitors over the summer. A major hotspot in Stockholm, the 1,600 sqm rooftop terrace could accommodate up to 300 people at a time and featured five food trucks and a bar, it also included boules lanes, ping pong tables, dart boards, as well as a kids area. Open day and evening all week, Top Floor was the perfect summer spot to relax, play games, enjoy great food and share a drink!

Air-mattress championship

Summer vibes across our destinations

Shopping City Süd hosted its very first air-mattress championship! More than 25 teams were up against each other in this unusual surfing competition. Contestants were assessed on a number of criteria such as style, movements and performance. The team that was able to gain the most points and surf the wave the longest was then crowned Shopping City Süd’s first air-mattress champion. This was part of a two-day Summer Festival happening over June 28 and 29, including a DIY flower-crown workshop and a vibrant Samba-parade. Visitors were also invited to feel the vibes and share the passion during a free dance workshop.

Jungle Adventure

Summer vibes across our destinations

A jungle-inspired live experience took over our two flagships in London last summer. Hosted at Westfield London from July 30 until August 4, and at Westfield Stratford City from August 17 to 26, Jungle Adventure offered a sensory discovery for children and adults alike. This free summer attraction embarked visitors on a jungle journey, fitted with a six-metre tall climbing wall and the first ever Virtual Reserve, a Wild Immersion virtual-reality (VR) experience. The VR experience took visitors from the city straight into the wilderness, where they found themselves surrounded by jungle animals.

A green bubble in La Défense

From June 5 to September 20, Westfield Les 4 Temps hosted Le Jardin Défendu (“Forbidden Garden”), the largest open air venue in the La Défense business district. In partnership with Passage Enchanté, we created an original and eco-friendly 1,500 sqm rooftop – including a 300 sqm VIP space – nestled amidst La Défense’s office buildings. Le Jardin Défendu offered a relaxing bubble for visitors and workers to enjoy a refreshing lunch break or a “green” after-work drink far from the hustle and bustle of the city, complete with trendy musical programming and a high-quality food menu featuring seasonal, organic and locally-sourced products.

Lunar New Year Festivities

We celebrated the arrival of the Year of the Pig at Los Angeles, JFK and Newark Liberty International Airports. Lion dancers, exciting decor and unique in-terminal promotions highlighted the festivities of one of the most important social and economic holidays in the Asian community. Travelling onlookers reveled in performances of the Lion Dance, which symbolises power, courage, and good fortune. Wushu Shaolin Entertainment performed the Lion Dance at LAX’s Tom Bradley International Terminal, and the Wan Chi Ming Hung Gar Institute brought the Lion Dance and percussionists to Terminals A and B at Newark Liberty and Terminal 8 at JFK.

On July 13, Westfield Forum des Halles, our iconic Parisian shopping centre, hosted the Adidas Take On Summer Tour for an inspiring afternoon in the heart of the French capital. James Harden (Houston Rockets) and Donovan Mitchell (Utah Jazz) put on a show under the Canopy, dribbling and dunking in-between amateur shows and tournaments – much to their fans enjoyment. The two NBA stars also participated in photo-ops and autograph sessions, leaving children and parents enchanted.

Fisketorvet, already a popular gaming destination, turned the centre into one big gaming festival for the second consecutive year in October. We teamed up with famous gaming brands such as Ubisoft, the producer behind the popular dance game Just Dance, to create a nine-day gaming event. Featuring various game stations, board game tournaments, as well as cosplay competitions, the festival invited visitors to challenge their gaming and coding skills, and be inspired by some of Denmark's most talented e-sports athletes. This year, for the first time, participants also had the opportunity to design their own augmented reality game thanks to a partnership with technology network CopenX.

From July 5 to September 1, Westfield Centrum Chodov hosted the City of Robots exhibition, featuring the most advanced smart robots from every corner of the world. In this theatre of robots, including 11 virtual reality experiences and cutting-edge space technologies, everything was available for testing and every zone was interactive. Children and adults enjoyed the company of 72 robots from Las Vegas, Beijing, London, and Berlin: controlling, talking to, and even hugging them!

ESC Congress 2019: “an exceptional vintage”!

The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) staged its largest ever scientific congress in Paris. Professor Marco Roffi, Chair of the ESC Congress Programme Committee, declared, “It will be remembered as an exceptional vintage!” More than 33,000 professionals gathered over five days in the French capital to learn the latest cardiovascular science and provide their patients the world over with the best possible care. The event was held at the Paris Convention Centre, a newly designed, centrally located venue part of the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles complex, with breath-taking views of the Eiffel Tower.

In June, we partnered with British Vogue to bring the year’s biggest health and wellness trends to life in our two London shopping centres. From June 14 to 16, Westfield London hosted the Weekend of Wellness, attracting over 20,000 people to enjoy a wide range of beauty, food and fitness activities. Visitors had the opportunity to relax in the Meditation Zone, taste new healthy products at the Wellness Bar or enjoy complimentary treatments, including hand and arm massages provided by the beauty brand Rituals, at the Anti-Pollution Pod. Our retailers were all onboard, with a number of brands hosting classes, workshops, or showing unique products and treatments. From June 20 to 30, it was Westfield Stratford City’s turn to offer visitors the opportunity to access premium wellness brands, discover exciting new products, enjoy a little me time, and get inspired, all in one place.

In March, the award-winning Beauty & Balance national campaign launched its third season, featuring a wide array of health-focused activities, services, and amenities. Last autumn, we joined forces with one of the biggest authorities in the industry to bring the ultimate beauty experience to the heart of London. Westfield London and Westfield Stratford City hosted the ELLE Weekender Beauty Fairground, a one-off beauty and wellness festival celebrating the biggest brands, names, and treatments of the moment. Providing an all-access peek into the ELLE beauty team, the experiential, beauty-themed happening offered a jam-packed schedule of activities, with shoppable pop-ups, complimentary makeovers, hair styling, and skincare treatments, in addition to curated talks and workshops with some of the most exciting names in the industry. With this immersive event, we offered our visitors the opportunity to experience the big beauty trends as they happen and to see the next big things that are set to shape the future of the beauty scene.

After intense regional selections across the country, 48 men and women gathered in Paris for the national final. Beauty and wellness in full bloom

From August 19 to September 7, Shopping City Süd offered visitors a glimpse into the vibrant world of sports with three weeks of stunning performances and entertaining shows. The centre hosted daily workshops and free animations for shoppers to work up a sweat, test their sports knowledge, and have fun. To end an active week full of exclusive activities, the centre hosted its first RUN by Decathlon on September 8. Running rather than shopping was the motto at Austria's largest shopping destination, where over 1,000 people from 18 nations gathered, transforming the centre into a huge running arena. Ranging from three to 77 years old, the participants covered more than 5,773 kilometres in total.

To celebrate the opening of Täby Deli, our new dining destination in Täby Centrum (Greater Stockholm), we partnered with TV cooking show MasterChef Sweden for an exclusive event featuring VIP guests, tastings and workshops. On April 13, the three 2019 finalists – Emilia Nilsson, Gabriel Jonsson and Wichudaporn Chaiyasaeng – demonstrated their cooking skills, presented their signature dishes and shared their best tips to the delight of our visitors. Täby Deli meets customers’ needs for renewed and exciting experiences, providing them with an inspiring meeting place and a wide variety of fresh ingredients to be eaten on site or cooked at home.

On July 11, we celebrated the completion of a two-year refurbishment at Centro Oberhausen, our flagship shopping destination in Germany. 20 million euros were invested in the revitalisation project, with a focus on the redesign and expansion of the Coca-Cola Oase dining space. Already one of the most successful food halls in Europe, it now has 1,300 seats across two floors, and a renewed offer of 20 exciting culinary concepts – making it one of the most vibrant hotspots in the region.

Reinventing the dining experience

Westfield Century City celebrated its second annual food festival event, TASTE, from October 18-20 and it was a sold-out success. Held in the Atrium and the Oasis event space, it featured 14 dining booths and a wide variety of gourmet choices for Californian foodies to enjoy. The programme also included live performances from pop artists, and stage presentations, such as a tiramisu cooking demo by Eataly’s Chef Giorgio and a how-to instructional demo with food stylist Meg Quinn of @ainttoproudtomeg on “Perfecting the Art of Plating”. The event culminated with an exceptional show by Top Chef winner and The Crack Shack co-founder Richard Blais, featuring different dishes from his restaurant, including their popular chicken oysters, champagne sorbet, and Blais’ favourite on-stage surprise – liquid nitrogen and a little fire!

We offer the best and most innovative food concepts, and continuously enhance our standards of service. We are bringing the dining experience in our destinations to the next level with the introduction of digital food ordering services. In March 2019, we opened Les Tables de Vélizy, a new exciting dining space at the cutting edge of culinary trends, at Westfield Vélizy 2 in the Paris area, with 23 new restaurants and kiosks next to a brand-new 18-screen cinema complex. Thanks to partnerships with Uber Eats and Deliveroo this innovative dining area meets all consumption modes, making it the first omnichannel dining platform in a shopping centre in Europe.

From June 19 to October 14, the Franco-Argentinian artist Pablo Reinoso took over Polygone Riviera’s art programme with an exceptional set of ten sculptures. Walking around the streets and squares of France’s largest open air shopping centre last summer, visitors could experience this exceptional exhibition – entitled Supernature – which was inspired by the idea of an exponential nature invading the urban space. Pablo Reinoso’s works of art encourage us to reconsider the public bench as a meeting place for discussions and exchanges, spurring poetic reflection on the role of art within the collective space.

An artistic celebration of pride

In 2019, on the occasion of LGBT Pride Month, several of our shopping centres across the US glittered up to celebrate love and diversity. At Westfield World Trade Center, a symbolic art installation came to life in the Oculus to celebrate WorldPride NYC and the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. Entitled Live 4 Love, the large, colourful installation was created by two Australian artists to bring the story of the LGBTQIA+ community to life in a dynamic way. Sponsored by Westfield World Trade Center – in partnership with Silverstein, the Port Authority of NY and NJ, Downtown Alliance and Goldberg Aberline Studio – the inflatable structure stood over 6 metres tall and was covered with powerfully designed symbols that represented freedom, inclusion, gender diversity, and friendship.

Europe’s largest urban art fresco

Art takes over our destinations

Since June, the roof of Pavilion 3 at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles exhibition complex has been the canvas for a masterpiece of contemporary urban art and Europe's largest fresco. Initiated by Viparis – a subsidiary of Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield and the Paris Île-de-France Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and European leader in convention & exhibition venues – this exceptional work of art was created by Ella & Pitr, a duo of street artists known for creating monumental murals. It took the artists 10 days to create this outstanding urban artwork, which covers an area of 2.3 hectares (the equivalent of four football fields). Best viewed from the rooftop terrace of Pavilion 7, the fresco is a perfect match for the scale of the Porte de Versailles complex.

From July 3 to 7, Westfield London hosted the Trending Store, an AI-powered boutique stocking fashion-forward looks based on what is trending across social media in real time. We partnered with AI trend experts NextAtlas to create this one-off store, bringing together the smart trending intel of online shopping and fashion influence with the human interaction of traditional shopping for the very first time. Via the power of machine learning, NextAtlas was able to predict the biggest breaking trends before they happened by analysing both visual and text content from social media sources. Upon entering the hi-tech store, customers were greeted by Ultra HD screens showcasing live trend data and visual inspiration, from the colours to shop in that trend to the hashtags that accompanied the trend on social media.

On October 15, we launched Pyramid., the first French concept store hosting digital-only brands. Located at the Carrousel du Louvre, and designed in collaboration with consulting firms Label Experience and Digital Native Group, the highly-curated space featured 20 young French online brands across 170 sqm. Pyramid. illustrated our commitment to supporting start-ups and propelling innovative brands, while strengthening our retail mix with fresh concepts never seen in shopping centres. As the worlds of online and offline retail blend, giving shoppers the ability to “touch and feel” is essential. We aim to be the first point of contact for digital brands that want to engage with their customers through dynamic, one-of-a-kind in-store experiences.

In July, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield and The VOID announced a partnership to open more than 25 permanent, state-of-the-art immersive virtual reality destinations in our shopping centres in the US and in Europe. The VOID, a Utah-based venture with experiential content deals spanning entertainment studios, including Disney and Sony, is recognised as creating the most immersive of virtual reality experiences and represents the future of entertainment. Titles include Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire, the award-winning experience by ILMxLAB and Lucasfilm; Ralph Breaks VR, by ILMxLAB created in collaboration with Walt Disney Animation Studios; Ghostbusters: Dimension; and original content Nicodemus: Demon of Evanishment; with several new experiences still to be released. This partnership will allow The VOID to scale its presence globally, taking advantage of Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield’s unique transatlantic network of flagship destinations.

Launched at Westfield London last summer, The Selfie Factory was a quirky, interactive, six-week pop-up experience for selfie-taking. The store offered visitors the chance to step up their Instagram game and fill up their camera rolls with incredible photos, thanks to surprising, photo-friendly environments, including a giant ball pit, a doughnut wall, confetti cove, and much more! The Store was also host to a popular daytime TV show, Lorraine, which filmed its weekly fashion feature onsite.

On March 8, Westfield Euralille launched the first edition of the Front Row fashion show – a young designer contest dedicated to a major global trend: sportswear fashion. Following the call for applications, 11 finalists were selected among young designers and fashion schools students from all over the country. They each presented three outfits (two for women and one for men) in front of an all-star jury, including former football player Rio Mavuba and fashion expert Philippe Zmirou. The show took place in the centre’s car park, an original setting that celebrated urban aesthetics!

On July 2, our Group CEO Christophe Cuvillier was in Stratford next to Mayor of London Sadiq Khan to mark the start of construction of East Bank, London’s new powerhouse of culture, education, innovation and growth. In 2019, we demonstrated once again the strength of our teams and our engagement to create more inclusive communities with the first ever URW Community Day. During the week of May 20 to 24, all employees had the opportunity to get involved to support local non-profit organisations (charities, hospitals, etc.) near our shopping centres. In total, over 2,000 employees across 12 countries donated more than 12,000 hours in support of 89 initiatives, alongside partner non-profits and public organisations. Depending on the different needs of our partners, the teams helped with renovations, environmental clean-ups, or to run an activity or event.

Garbera – our shopping centre in Spain’s San Sebastian region – organised a special clean-up session at La Concha Beach, with NGO partner Surfrider Foundation. Thanks to the combined efforts of more than 130 participants, we picked up 1,700 cigarette butts and over 3,000 different types of plastic waste. The centre also hosted workshops for children, who were invited to create their own musical instruments out of recycled waste, followed by a small "planet-friendly" concert.

Download a tree, grow a forest

We are change-makers

In September, our Polish flagship Wroclavia launched the Download a Virtual Tree, Grow a Forest campaign. In this innovative project conducted in partnership with the city of Wroclaw and local NGOs, visitors could download a virtual tree on their mobile phone by scanning a QR code on the giant plant-pot located in front of the shopping centre. For each of the 10,000 virtual tree downloaded during the campaign, one real tree will be planted in Wroclaw. The project kicked off with eco-workshops for preschool children and a special gathering during which art school students painted the giant plant-pot.

Job seekers in the English capital were able to explore thousands of employment and training opportunities at the London Job Show, hosted at Westfield Stratford City and Westfield London last autumn. More than 60 employers gathered at each of the free-to-attend events. The Group itself recruited for available positions at our London flagships, which provide approximately 32,000 jobs in the capital today. Over 12,000 additional jobs will be created in the future thanks to developments at Westfield Stratford City and Croydon. Keynote speakers and recruitment professionals offered seminars to visitors hoping to gain valuable insight into the recruitment process and tips on how to succeed in their job search.

Part of the regeneration of White City, Exhibition London is a collaborative project by Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield and event specialists Broadwick Venues, set to create outstanding experiences in the heart of London. Housed in the historic Grade II listed Dimco East building, Exhibition London creates a major new 3,000-person-capacity venue and events space adjacent to our Westfield London flagship. Our Design & Construction team worked closely with Broadwick and the architectural team to restore and repurpose the 120-year-old building to deliver this new entertainment hub, which will host everything from local art shows and corporate events to fashion shows and music concerts. The ability to harness the footfall and exposure of Europe’s largest shopping destination in conjunction with a cutting-edge venue is unprecedented in the English capital.

Palisade Welcomes its First Residents

The 300-unit Palisade residential tower – a first of its kind for the Group – opened in July at Westfield UTC in San Diego to welcome its new residents. After 22 months of construction, the $160 million development project now provides hotel-like amenities in the heart of a job rich area. Designed by Joseph Wong Design Associates, Palisade features modern residences and best-in-class amenities, such as a luxury pool deck surrounded by a large outdoor kitchen, a co-working space, a yoga studio, a karaoke room and a sky lounge on the 23rd floor offering panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.

Forging new ties with the city

On November 20, the urban transformation project at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles took a major step forward with the inauguration of the new Pavilion 6 and its spectacular moving canopy designed by famous French architect Jean Nouvel, as well as two hotels – a Novotel and a Mama Shelter – totalling 450 rooms. Spanning across 15,000 sqm and equipped with the latest technologies, the new-generation exhibition hall brings Paris Expo Porte de Versailles into a new era, centred on visitor experience, conviviality, and hospitality.

On May 22 the foundation stone of Westfield Hamburg was laid. Located in Überseequartier, it is one of the most innovative districts in Europe, and Hamburg’s largest development project. The ceremony was presided over by Christophe Cuvillier, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield Group CEO, and Dr. Peter Tschentscher, Mayor of Hamburg. This mixed-use project will comprise an 8,500 sqm shopping destination, three hotels, three office buildings, three residential buildings and a cruise terminal.
